The usual reason to do this is size. PNG stores every pixel exactly, which is wonderful for a diagram and wasteful for a photograph — the same holiday picture is routinely three to five times larger as a PNG than as a JPG nobody could tell apart.

The thing worth knowing before you convert: PNG supports transparency and JPG does not. Anything transparent has to become something, and here it becomes white. If your image has a transparent background and you convert it to JPG, you will get a white box where the transparency used to be. That is the format doing what it does, not a bug.

Quality is adjustable. The default sits high enough that the result is hard to distinguish from the original at normal viewing size, while still cutting most of the file size.
