Convert MOV to MP4
Re-encode a QuickTime or iPhone .mov into an H.264 MP4 in your browser. Nothing uploaded.
Open the converterMOV is Apple's QuickTime container. Plenty of upload forms, editors and older devices want MP4 instead, so this re-encodes the video to H.264 in an MP4 — the most widely playable combination there is.
You choose the resolution (keep the original, or 1080p, 720p, 480p or 360p) and a quality level. The size refers to the short side, so a portrait phone clip converted at 720 comes out 720 pixels wide. A size larger than the source leaves it alone rather than upscaling, because upscaling only invents detail and inflates the file.
Conversion plays the clip through once, so a two-minute video takes about two minutes. That is deliberate: speeding playback up makes the browser drop frames rather than work harder — in testing, a 300-frame clip kept all 300 at normal speed and only 151 at four times speed.
Questions
- Why does the MP4 have Opus audio instead of AAC?
- Browsers don't include an AAC encoder, so the soundtrack is encoded as Opus. Modern players handle it fine; some older players show the picture without sound. If you don't need the audio, choose Remove audio.
- Can I make the file smaller?
- Yes — pick 720p or 480p and a lower quality level. Quality is set as a bitrate, so it directly controls the file size.
- Is the video uploaded anywhere?
- No. It uses the video encoder already built into your browser, so nothing is sent to a server and no codec is downloaded.
