Convert MP4 to an animated GIF

Turn a video clip into a looping GIF in your browser. Nothing uploaded, no watermark, no account.

Drop an MP4 — or a MOV, WebM or MKV, anything your browser can play — pick Animated GIF as the output, and choose a frame rate: 5, 10 or 15 frames per second. The GIF loops forever, the way GIFs are expected to.

Frames are taken by seeking to exact timestamps rather than by playing the clip and grabbing whatever the machine kept up with, so a ten-second clip at 10 fps gives you exactly 100 frames, every time, on a fast laptop or a slow phone.

Colour is where most GIF makers go wrong. A GIF can only hold 256 colours, and building a separate palette for every frame makes colours visibly flicker as the clip plays. This builds one palette sampled across the whole animation, so a sky stays the same blue from the first frame to the last.

Worth knowing. A GIF is capped at 300 frames — 30 seconds at 10 fps. Longer clips are sampled more sparsely to fit, rather than being cut off. Unless you choose a size, the GIF comes out 360 pixels on its short side, because GIF files grow very quickly with resolution. GIFs have no sound, so the audio is dropped.

Questions

Is there a watermark?
No. The GIF is made on your device and nothing is added to it.
Why is my GIF so large?
GIF is an old, inefficient format: every frame is stored as a full indexed image. Drop to 5 fps or a smaller size, or keep the clip short. For anything long, an MP4 or WebM will be a fraction of the size.
Does my video get uploaded?
No. It is decoded and re-encoded in your browser, so private clips never leave your device.
