WebP turns up when you save an image from a website, and then refuses to open in whatever you wanted to use it in. Plenty of desktop software, older photo tools and a good deal of enterprise software still will not touch it. Converting to PNG is usually the quickest way out.

PNG is the right target if the image has transparency — logos, icons, anything cut out from a background — because both formats support an alpha channel, so nothing is lost in the move. If the image is a photograph with no transparency, JPG will give you a much smaller file.

Animated WebP is a different thing from a still one, and this converts the still image. If you have an animated WebP, you want a GIF or a video, not a PNG.
